CM Jammakattel instructs to operate godowns for early preparedness for DRR

KATHMANDU, July 26: Bagmati Province Chief Minister Shalikram Jammakattel has instructed the concerned authorities to bring into operation the godowns as part of an early preparedness for disaster risk reduction (DRR).


The CM instructed the authorities to keep warehouses in Makawanpur, Nuwakot and Kavrepalanchowk districts in ready position to store relief and rescue materials as a part of early preparedness for DRR. 


In a meeting of the Province Disaster Management Council on Wednesday, CM Jammakattel shared that the fund for disaster management would be transferred to the local level by formulating procedures.

CM Jammakattel directed to initiate early preparedness works in the local levels that are at high risks of disasters. 


It is estimated that over 97,000 people of 22,000 households in the province would be affected by the monsoon-induced disasters such as landslide, flood and soil erosion among others this monsoon.  


Among the 13 districts in the province, Makawanpur, Sindhuli, Sindhupalchowk, Chitwan, Kathmandu, Rasuwa, Kavrepalanchowk and Ramechhap are prone to floods and landslides, according to the statistics maintained by the National Disasters Risk Reduction and Management Authority.


During last year's monsoon, 13 massive floods were recorded in the province in which two people died and nine houses were completely damaged. Most of the cases of flood were reported in Bhaktapur last year, it was shared. 


Similarly, in the past 10 years, 243 cases of floods were reported in the province in which 96 people died, 39 were injured and 58 went missing. 


The meeting was attended by the provincial ministers, secretaries and stakeholders among others, shared Ganga Narayan Shrestha, Minister for Internal Affairs and Law and Spokesperson for the Bagmati Province.
