POKHARA, Dec 14: Nepali star striker Anil Gurung handed over a cheque of Rs 100,000 to president of Sahara Club Bikram Thakali on Monday and said, “I am obliged to help Sahara for the support I received from the club. This fund is meager as I have a lot more to do still for Sahara.”[break]

Anil contributed the amount to Sahara club during a felicitations program organized by the club on Monday. Sahara UK had collected Rs 80,000 for Anil when he went to play for London´s Woking Club some months ago. Anil added Rs 20,000 to the amount and handed it in to help the club build a sports academy building.

“Sahara helped me attain fame and it becomes my duty to help the club add a few more blocks to the academy building now under construction,” Anil said and added, “For a long time I´ve wanted to help Sahara. This is just the beginning; I will lend all the support I can in future also.” Anil is the first person to contribute for the building, according to Sahara Club members.

Anil said the felicitations function has inspired him to do better in this field. “Not only me, others also deserve this kind of honour. It gives confidence to the players,” he said.

The club has been producing football players since 2001 and Anil happens to have been in the first batch of trainees. “I grew up in this very place and it is my duty to help my juniors,” Anil said.

Anil´s mother Laxmi Gurung told Republica, “I only gave birth to Anil. It was Sahara that helped him reach this height.” Meanwhile, National Sports Council (NSC) member Khadga Ranabhat has praised Anil´s single mother for raising Anil.

“Eight years have already passed since Anil joined the academy but it seemed like yesterday when he came here with his head bent down,” said Thakali.

Anil was very talented in football from the beginning, said members of Sahara Club. Anil recently signed a contract worth Rs 6,300,000 for three years with India´s I League Club Shillong Lajong.

He performed extremely well in the SAFF Championship held in Bangladesh recently. Nepal´s coach Krishna Thapa said after watching him perform in the SAFF Championship, Anil is a promising player .
