KATHMANDU, April 27: Inter Party Women's Alliance (IPWA) has called for increasing the women's representation in the local level election to 50 per cent.

Addressing a news conference IPWA organised here today, IPWA Chair Renu Kumari Yadav demanded that the women representation should be increased to 50 per cent to ensure the proportional and inclusive participation of women in the state apparatuses and governance in recognition of their important contribution to the different political struggles waged in the country at different times.

"Although the constitution states that there should be 50 per cent women representation at the local level, 40 per cent at the province level and 33 per cent at the federal level, there is concern that the required number of women candidates might not be attained if any two parties struck an electoral alliance and recommended male candidature in the election," she said.

Chairperson Yadav said there was the increasing risk of losing women's rights when they are not included and adequately represented in the decision making apparatuses of the state.

IPWA was established on International Women’s Day, 2006 as a common political forum for Women in Nepal. Women leaders of various 10 parties are affiliated to the Alliance. RSS
