KATHMANDU, Oct 22: Director Deepak Rauniyar is attempting to crowd-fund the post-production of his movie, Highway, through an international crowd-funding website.

Rauniyar is seeking US$30,000 (approximately Rs. 2.3 million) in 30 days.

Kickstarter is a crowd-funding website where people can pledge a certain amount to fund creative projects.

If a project is successful to raise the pledged amount in the pledged period, the project gets funded; otherwise, all the raised money is returned to those who pledged to support.

Rauniyar’s movie, which has already gained attention for its casting that includes, among others, the noted journalist and philanthropist Rabindra Mishra.

The movie is also being co-produced by Louverture Films, a company co-founded by actor Danny Glover and Jolyn Barnes, and Aadi Productions.

“We’re trying to raise money for the post-production to ensure that Highway is as good as any other international films,” Rauniyar, 33, told Republica. “The money is for the final edit, sound design, color correction, and mixing.”

Set against the backdrop of the new culture of organizing general strikes in post-conflict Nepal, the movie follows five different relationship stories that become connected during an ill-fated bus journey from eastern Nepal to the capital, Kathmandu.

The film has already got an international lineup with Golden Globe award winner Richard Hurrowitch composing and David Barker and renowned Indian Rita Meher editing the movie.

Rauniyar, who already directed films like Chaukaith and Pooja, is dreaming big with Highway.

“With Highway, we’re trying to achieve something which for a long time Nepali cinema is looking for,” he said. “We’re very close to making a strong movie, but we’re raising money to pay for the final few things.”

Rauniyar hopes that the crowd-funding will be successful. “If you and all others support, we can raise the money,” he said. “We’re looking for everyone’s support and collaboration.”
