DHANGADHI, July 15:  Every year, floods and landslides affect all nine districts of Province 7. The province faces huge losses of lives and property. While the hill districts of the province are prone to landslides, floods have been devastating the tarai districts.

Karnali, Mohana, Kandra along with other rivers bring floods to dozens of settlements of Kailali district. Kanchanpur is also at the risk of flood in the Mahakali River. Hundreds of houses are inundated every year, displacing dozens of families. With nowhere else to go, the displaced are forced to take refuge at schools and community forests.  Residents of the hill districts have lost many near and dear ones and property to landslides. Loss of lives and property only increases as monsoon advances further.

Acknowledging the risks posed by monsoon-induced disasters, the provincial government has pledged to ensure quick rescue and relief.

“We have risks of floods and landslides in all nine districts of the province. We are taking various measures in order to ensure that lives are not lost owing to delay in rescue and treatment,” said Chief Minister Trilochan Bhatta.

According to him, they are preparing to build at least one helipad each in all 88 local units of the province. He said it would make quick transportation of the victims easy in case of emergency situations.
“Our main objective is to ensure timely treatment if someone is injured in disasters,” he added.
