The export of haylage from Nepal to China on Saturday represents a significant milestone in the economic cooperation between these two nations. With the successful shipment of 10 containers of animal feed from Bharatpur to Shigatse in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China, this achievement not only signifies the growth of Nepal's agricultural industry but also brings high hopes and promising opportunities for both countries. The animal feed export program, jointly organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, and Bharatpur Metropolitan City, showcases the potential of this growing sector and the possibilities for strengthening bilateral ties. Nepal and China reached an agreement to export haylage, a type of grass that is chopped and packed, to China in March 2022. Among the nine documents signed by Nepali and Chinese officials, one titled "Protocol on the Safety and Health Conditions of Haylage Export from Nepal to China" solidified the terms of this agreement. Haylage is highly sought after as animal fodder in the highlands on the other side of the Himalayas. Nepal, with its favorable position and greener pastures, is well-equipped to benefit from exporting haylage. This nutritious animal feed has high nutrient value and helps boost milk production, making it in high demand in the Tibetan plateau, particularly for feeding cattle like yaks. Nepal’s export potential of this grass is high given the fact that the growing season for forage is very short in TAR, lasting from May to August, and the rainy season during harvest results in feed shortage there.

Nepal's reputation for agricultural prowess is well-established, and this animal feed export further solidifies its position as a reliable and competitive player in the international market. Produced by Horizon International Pvt Ltd, the animal feed exemplifies the innovative approaches adopted by Nepalese companies to meet the increasing demand for high-quality livestock products. With plans to annually send 200 million tons of animal feed to Shigatse, a city lacking hay production due to its harsh climate, Nepal is better positioned to seize the opportunity to fill this gap and establish itself as a key supplier. The success of this animal feed export program is a testament to the concerted efforts of both the private and public sectors. Horizon International Pvt Ltd's involvement in purchasing corn plants from local farmers, providing advanced seed varieties, arranging irrigation systems, and offering technical assistance has not only boosted agricultural productivity but also enhanced the quality of the animal feed produced. This investment in technology and farmer support is crucial in ensuring sustained growth and long-term success in the industry.

The animal feed export program holds immense economic potential for Nepal, with the exporting company predicting an annual export value of Rs 4 billion. This significant volume will not only bolster Nepal's trade balance with China but also create new job opportunities and increase agricultural production. Furthermore, this program acts as a catalyst for further exploration and expansion of agricultural exports from Nepal, diversifying its export portfolio and reducing dependency on traditional sectors. The animal feed export program exemplifies the untapped potential of Nepal's agricultural sector. This historic export of animal feed from Nepal to China signifies the growth and potential of Nepal's agricultural industry. Through the joint efforts of the private and public sectors, Nepal has capitalized on its agricultural expertise to provide high-quality animal feed to a region in need. This milestone not only strengthens bilateral cooperation between China and Nepal but also paves the way for future collaborations in the agricultural sector. The animal feed export program brings high hopes among the people of Nepal, offering promising opportunities for economic growth and prosperity.
