KATHMANDU, April 17: Choosing the right subject, whether it is for a college major or for a high-school major, is always difficult, especially for Nepali teenagers whose families have high expectations for them.

Even if they do get a chance to choose a major of their choice, most of them are unsure about what would be the right major subject for them, so they can achieve the height of academic excellence.

So if you are an SEE-appeared student and have already determined which subject you want to choose as your major, but are still unsure about it, here are a few tips which might help you to ascertain whether you have chosen the right subject.

Passion

The first thing to consider while choosing the major subject, or identifying whether a particular subject is right for you, is the passion you have for it. If you are not passionate about the subject you have chosen, it’s not worth it and is similar to wasting your time working on something which might not give you positive result.

Intuition

Sometimes you need to trust your intuition and the gut feeling which will tell you that if you have made the right decision. This instinct will automatically tell you if you will be able to excel in that particular subject by examining the way you feel when someone speaks about the subject. For example, if you get a cold sweat dripping down your back whenever you hear the word “physics”, taking up physics as major might not be a good decision for you. You should feel comfortable with the subject of your choice and be able to learn as much as possible instead of dreading that you might fail every time you attend the class.

Past records

Your past academic records might also help you determine if you have chosen the right subject. If you want to choose sociology as your major, but your past records show that you are weak in social studies, choosing it as your major for high school might not be the right choice.

Your nature

Sometimes your nature and acquired soft skills can also help you choose your major. If you are a person who enjoys communicating with people or learning about new culture, taking up communication or something related to social science would be much beneficial for you. If you are someone who is book smart and would prefer to stay at home and study rather than socializing, taking up practical subjects like mathematics or science which require more of book knowledge would be beneficial for you.

Standardized tests

One of the easiest ways to find out if the major of your choice is right for you is taking standardized tests. Some of the standardized tests can determine which major would be right for you by simply examining your IQ or answers you have given to the test.

Think about your long-tem goal

When you take up a major you need to have a vision or a goal. If you are thinking of taking up economics as your major, but don’t see yourself making a career in the field of economics or succeeding, it’s better not to take it. Think about subjects that you think will help you build your career and subjects through which you can make a profession.
