Gurung who celebrated his 15th birthday five days ago holds six national records and bettered his own record in men´s 200m backstroke on Thursday clocking 2 minutes 39.06 seconds. Gurung earlier had a national record of 2 minutes 43.10 seconds during Second NSA Cup in Kathmandu in October. Besides, Gurung secured top positions in 200m freestyle (2 minutes 24.95 seconds), 200m individual medley and 100m butterfly (1minutes 08.10 seconds). [break]
On Wednesday Gurung had secured gold medals in 400m freestyle (4 minutes 49.50 seconds), 100m backstroke (1 minute 14.03 seconds), 200m butterfly (2 minutes 39.70 seconds) and 100m freestyle (1 minute 00.69second).
Gurung who holds a national record in six out of eight events he competed aims to set a national record in those two events as well. "I will try to set national record in the remaining two events," Gurung said. 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly are the only events in which Gurung does not have a national record. Anand Lepcha holds record in both categories set about two and half decades ago with the timing of 58 seconds in freestyle and 1minute 3.43 seconds in butterfly.
However, eight gold medals from Gurung was not enough for Police to secure team championship title. Instead, Police even failed to gain the top three spots. Dhumbarahi claimed the team championship title with 214 points while Nepal Army Club came second with 174 points and Lalit Krishna stood third with 139 points. Gold, silver and bronze medal in each categories were allocated 9, 7 and 6 points respectively.
Miraj Prajapati of Dhumbarahi Swim Club and Dilil Thapa Magar of Nepal Army Club secured silver and bronze in men´s 200m backstroke finishing behind record holder Gurung. Devash Maharjan of Rotary Club, Durbar Marg and Jayant Prakash Gurung of Lalit Krishna Marigold Club secured silver and bronze in men´s 200m freestyle. Similarly, Dilip Thapa Magar and Chitra Paudel of Nepal Army Club secured second and third positions in men´s 200m individual medley.
Meanwhile, Osina Bharati of Dhumbarahi added three more gold medals in her overnight tally of three golds and a silver to finish with six gold and a silver to top women´s medal chart. Bharati on Thursday secured gold medals in 100 m backstroke (1 minute 28.67 seconds), 100m freestyle (1 minute 14.94 seconds) and 50m butterfly (36.71 seconds). Bharati had claimed top positions in 200 m individual medley (3 minute 2.00 seconds), 100m butterfly (1 minute 32.93 seconds) and 50m backstroke (40.22 seconds).
Ceila Gurung of Lalit Krishna stood second in women´s 100m backstroke and Rashika Paudel of Totary Club third finishing behind Bharati. Anjalee Syangbo of Starfish satisfied with silver in 100m freestyle and Jitjwely Maharjan of Dhumbarahi with bronze. Similarly, Shyangbo and Jitjwely secured silver and bronze in 50m butterfly.
Gurung of Lalit Krishna earned women´s 400m freestly gold clocking 6 minutes 27.23 seconds earning her third gold medal in the event. She finished ahead of Paudel of Rotary Club and Yam Kumari Ghale of Army. Kasari Thapa Magar and Ghale of Army took home gold and silver respectively in women´s 200m butterfly. Yangchen Lama of Little Angel´s Swim Club finished with bronze.
Banin Shrestha of Dhumbarahi secured top position in men´s 100m breaststroke clocking 1 minute 22.98 seconds. Kiran Karki of same club stood second and Prabesh Adhikari of Annapurna finished third.
Jayant Prakash Gurung of Lalit Krishna earned gold in men´s 50m backstroke taking 40.78 second to complete the distance. Manish Chitrakar and Miraj Prajapati stood second and third.
Thapa Magar of Army took men´s 50m gold clocking 28.10 seconds. He finished ahead of Manish Chitrakar and Miraj Prajapati of Dhumbarahi. Annapurna Club claimed 4X50m men´s relay finishing ahead of Dhumbarahi and Rotary.
