Along with recognizing the contribution of teachers, this day also signifies the birth anniversary of sage Ved Vyas, the legendary author of Mahabharat, Vedas and Puranas.

Anyone who helps you overcome your confusion and helps you get your goal is the Guru. In Sanskrit, its syllables literally means ‘Gu’ as darkness and ‘ru' as destroyer; hence Guru means a person who destroys the darkness.
