Govt regrets Meghalaya killings, eviction

KATHMANDU, May 31: The government has regretted the killing and eviction of Nepalis in the border areas of the eastern Indian states of Assam and Meghalaya, and urged the southern neighbor to take urgent measures for the safety and security of the Nepali community.

Issuing a statement on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said the government has taken up the issue with the Indian government and is closely assessing the situation of the Nepali community.

MoFA´s concern comes amidst a standing ultimatum to the minority Nepali speaking community by the indigenous Khasi community to leave Meghalaya. More than 10 Nepali-speaking people were killed in the third week of May in a series of clashes following a border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.

Meanwhile, Youth Federation Nepal, the youth wing of the CPN-UML, on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Indian embassy in Kathmandu, protesting the eviction of Nepali-speaking people in Meghalaya, alleged excesses by Indian security personnel along the Nepal-India border and border encroachment by India, said Mahesh Basnet, President of Youth Federation Nepal.
