KATHMANDU, Aug 15: The government is considering increasing the fee on permits to climb Mount Everest from 2025.

According to an official at the Department of Tourism, the department has proposed to the government to increase the royalty for obtaining permission to climb Mount Everest by US $4,000 from 2025. 

At present, a foreign climber who wishes to climb the 8,848.86 meter high mountain has to pay a royalty fee of $11,000 (Rs 914,000). The amount for a Nepali climber is fixed at Rs 75,000.

If the proposal is approved, the new fee will be US $15,000 (Rs 1.247 million) for foreigners.

The last time the government reviewed the royalty for climbing Everest was on January 1, 2015. Prior to that, an expedition with a maximum of 15 members required per person to pay $10,000 to acquire the climbing permits.

As per the source, Nepal's tourism authorities are amending the mountaineering regulation and in order to enforce new rules.

This spring climbing season, which ended on May 31, the government issued the highest of 478 permits to climb Mount Everest compared to the previous record high of 409 individuals in 2021. The government collected US $5.08 million in revenues from Everest alone this spring climbing season.
