KATHMANDU, March 6: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Dilendra Prasad Badu has expressed his hope that the obstructed House of Representatives (HoR) session will resume following the main opposition CPN (UML) becoming a part of the recommendation committee to proceed with an impeachment motion against Chief Justice (CJ) Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana.

Some members of the committee are from the UML, which has been obstructing the parliament session for around six months demanding the resignation of the Speaker and disqualification of 14 lawmakers (previously from the party) as the HoR members.

After today's HoR meeting, the minister said that the government has taken the UML seriously, having sent a name-list of its leaders to become members of the committee in a positive way. "They (the UML) have sent a name-list for this matter. They have given support despite their protest during 'the yes or no' process. Now the process will move ahead. The hope of the resumption of the parliament session has increased," he said.

Stating that there is a need for the participation of the main opposition in pushing through most important bills including that of citizenship linking the concerns of people in parliament, the minister pledged to effectively move ahead the parliamentary business and connect the legislature with the people once there is help from the opposition.

“We expect to face a question from the people if obstruction in the House continues,” he said, adding the government is of the view of making it vibrant.

CPN (Unified Socialist), a breakaway faction from the CPN (UML), hinted at early elections as an alternative to end the existing political situation.

“Rumors of early election are obvious when the House is marred by a prolonged disruption,” he said.

Main opposition CPN (UML) parliamentary party deputy leader Subash Chandra Nembang said the party recommended members to be in the impeachment motion recommendation committee as it believed in the parliamentary practices and procedures and wanted to take the proposal to a right conclusion through due process.
