KATHMANDU, May 8: Sher Bahadur Deuba, the president of the main opposition party Nepali Congress, has said that the present government has already lost the moral and political grounds to govern the country.

Speaking on the first day of the budget session of the federal parliament at the House of Representatives on Friday, Deuba said, "This government has already lost the moral and political grounds to rule the country as it was found to have indulged in corruption and various anti-constitutional activities by going against the democratic norms and values."

Deuba also expressed regret for what he called the "government's involvement in kidnapping a parliamentarian" at a time when the entire people and the country were passing through hardships due to the coronavirus pandemic. "These types of anti-constitutional and criminal activities are intolerable," he said.

The president said his party would continue its battle against the government's autocratic moves.

He slammed the government for failing to distribute relief packages to the laborers, unemployed youths, students and homeless people at this hour of the coronavirus crisis.

"The government brought two controversial ordinances related to the Political Party Act and the Constitutional Council Act at a time when the entire nation should have remained united in battling the virus. It has clearly shown the ill-intention of the prime minister," he said.

Deuba, however, said that his party stands with the government in the battle against the coronavirus pandemic. "Although we oppose the government's ill-intended moves, we are always with the government to prevent and control the coronavirus," he said.

The NC president also urged the government to intensify coronavirus testing across the country given the steep rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in recent days.
