Govt doctor seeks help for cancer treatment

PALPA, Sept 29: Dr Chitra Prasad Sharma Wagle treated numerous patients and helped many to recuperate throughout over two decades of his medical service in the rural area of the country. But at present he is left to fend for himself without anyone to help in his struggle for life against cancer.



Wagle, who is undergoing treatment in Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Cancer Hospital in India for three months, is spending his time in social networking site Facebook and trying to forget the pain reading the deluge of the whishes posted by his friend and well wishers.[break]



“I spent my life providing health service to the people in remote parts of the country working as a government doctors. But, government is yet to provide the medical expense as per the rule,” Wagle told Republica over telephone.



Wagle, originally from Murgiya of Rupandehi, provided health services for the people in the remote area for years while he was posted in Palpa, Pyauthan, among others. However, the government has acted apathetically to provide due expense for the medical treatment of Wagle. It has been already three month since Wagle made appeal to the Prime Minister´s Relief Fund and Health Department to provide him with the expense. But government has taken no action on his application yet.



“I wish to spenp rest of my life in the service of people after I recuperate from the disease,” said Wagle adding, “If government wishes, it can provide me with new life and I can save lives of many patient after that.” He expressed his unhappiness over the government treatment toward him.



“I sacrifice my youthful energy in the government service thinking the government to be my guardian but its indifference toward my situation is killing me,” said he.



Wagle was diagnosed with appendix cancer while he was studying Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Thailand under the World Health Organization Scholarship. He spent Rs 200,000 for the treatment in Thailand and returned as he could not bear further expense. He is now in India with the recommendation of the Nepal Medical Board for treatment abroad.



“I am receiving Chemotherapy every 15 days. Six of its cycles have been completed and still six more remain,” Wagle informed. According to Sharma one cycle of Chemotherapy cost up to Rs 150,000.



He personally made a telephone call to the Health Secretary Dr Praveen Mishra asking for help. He received the assurance from Mishra but there has been action.



Wagle was the popular doctor among people while he severed 12 years in Arghakhachi district hospital. He conducted many reformation works in the hospital and converting it from 15 beds to a 32-beds hospital. According to a local Ganesh Khanal, Wagle was facilitated by the locals for his selfless service for the public health. Wagle was one of the few doctors who continued his service in the remote areas during the time of Maoist insurgency.
