KATHMANDU, Sept 13: The government has urged businesspeople to clear their outstanding dues, taking advantage of incentives, including tax waiver, offered through the Financial Ordinance 2013.

In a bid to broaden tax net and discourage the trend of evading taxes, the government offered waiver of outstanding dues to businesspeople, giving them special deadline through the ordinance. The government has also urged tax payers, who have not yet registered with the government including brick industries, cooperatives and media, to come under the purview of tax.[break]

Speaking at an interaction here on Friday, Tanka Mani Sharma, director general of Inland Revenue Department (IRD), said the government would take appropriate action against those failing to clear the dues within the given deadline.

According to ordinance, firms that clear the dues of fiscal year 2011/12 by mid-January need not to submit income statements. They can pay just the outstanding dues.

“We´ve given businesspeople the last chance. After the deadline, we won´t spare anyone found involved in tax evasion,” added Sharma.

He also urged leaders of representative organizations of business people to identify the tax defaulters and boycott them in a bid to put moral pressure on them.

On the occasion, Gopal Prasad Ghimire, director of IRD, made a presentation on special provisions incorporated in the ordinance.
