A cabinet meeting at Singha Durbar on Friday decided to declare public holidays on Monday and Tuesday for collecting people's feedback on the new statute draft.
The decision is in line with the government's previous decision to launch the feedback collection as a 'national campaign'.
With the announcement, government offices will now resume only from July 22 as July 18 is a Saturday and July 19 is also a public holiday to mark the Muslim festival of Eid-a-Fitr.
Officials at the Home Ministry said that government employees and security personnel deployed in all the constituencies with the lawmakers collecting feedback will carry out their duties during the public holidays. "Other than that, all government offices will remain closed," said Laxmi Dhakal, spokesperson of the ministry.
Lawmakers left for their constituencies on Friday and will carry out feedback collection on July 20 and 21.
Last week, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development had directed local officials not to take leave during the period allotted for collecting public feedback on the preliminary draft of the new constitution. The Constituent Assembly Secretariat has informed that a total of 41 government teams have left for the villages with the preliminary draft of the new constitution to seek people's feedback.
The cabinet also decided to provide Rs 600,000 each to the families of Kanchan Kumari Thakuri, a rape victim who died while undergoing treatment, and Ashik Sah, who was killed after being kidnapped.
