KATHMANDU, March 22: The government has abolished the National Land Commission. A minister confirmed that the decision to dissolve the commission was made during Thursday's cabinet meeting.

On September 15, 2021, the government formed a commission under the chairmanship of Keshab Niraula, the former president of the Nepali Congress-affiliated Nepal Teachers Association.

Prior to this, the previous government had terminated the Land Related Problem Resolution Commission led by UML leader Devi Gyawali. Following shifts in the power coalition, the decision to abolish the National Land Commission was made to pave the way for the formation of a new commission.

The National Land Commission was tasked with issuing land ownership certificates to landless Dalits, squatters, and unorganized residents. Recently, it had initiated the distribution of land ownership certificates in various areas. It has initiated the process of taking applications from the local levels, verifying them and sending the land ownership certificate to the Surveyor's Office.

Currently, a proposal has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance to reduce the fee for providing land ownership certificates for government land to unorganized residents.

In this situation, with the change in the power equation, a minister said that it was decided to abolish the old commission to form a new commission. The Land Act of 2021 stipulates the establishment of a commission for land management and resolving land-related issues.
