Golmaal 3: Chemistry of laughing gas

KATHMANDU, Nov 14: When director Rohit Shetty started his film career in Bollywood with Zameeen (2003), an action thriller based on the hijacking of Indian Airlines 814, nobody imagined that he would one day direct a film like Golmaal (2006), one of the Bollywood’s hit comedies to date.

Starring Ajay Devgan, Arshad Warsi, Sharman Joshi, Paresh Rawal, Tusshar Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor, Golmaal received good reviews and , in 2008, Shetty released Golmaal Returns, which was less catchy and funny comparing to its prequel.[break]

Director Shetty should have ended his Golmaal project then. The Golmaal 3 is seriously not funny and the script is all golmaal (confusing). To get series that run smooth from episode to episode is difficult. Film trilogies also require a lot of effort. Shetty tried his best to establish his Golmaal’s branding, but fails in his third attempt.

Though director Shetty has succeeded in retaining most of the characters from Golmaal Returns, the script and the screenplay are overlooked and has many loopholes.

Comedy might seem like an easy genre; but it’s a Herculean task to make people genuinely laugh. Shetty overlooks this reality and trusts his branding so much that the film is laughable but because it misses true comedy most of the time.

Madhav (Arshad Warsi), Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor) and Laxman (Kunal Khemu) are scheming sons of Pritam (Mithun Chakroborty). Meanwhile, Gopal (Ajay Devgan) and Laxman (Shreyas Talpade) are sons of Geeta (Ratna Pathak). Pritam is fed up with his sons’ immature behavior with people and money forgery for his fun. Madhav is the leader among his two other brothers. While on the other side, Gopal is the angry man. Kareena plays Daboo, Gopal’s childhood friend.

In both families, the Laxmans have speaking disabilities. Pritam’s Laxman can’t speak at all but tries imitating the pronunciation while Geeta’s Laxman, though he can speak, stammers. Both their children come to a scuffle over starting a business and turn into enemies, unknown of the fact that their parents are ex-lovers. They continue to lock their horns until they discover – all of them are orphans adopted by Pritam and Geeta.Puppy (Johny Lever) as a Ghajini-style forgetful don who adopts a new filmy avatar every few minutes, gets the audience to laugh a bit.

Other trick of old Hindi movies - camera pans and quick zooms, are not enough to tickle your funny bones. Nonetheless, known adages and popular funny phrases make some of the scenes a little enjoyable.

What steals the show is Mithun doing his Disco Dancer once again. Theater artiste Ranta Pathak shines in the movie. Arshad Warsi is with his forever tapori style and by now he knows how to carry his character. Shreyas Talpade is average while Kunal Khmeu does his job well. Tusshar Kapoor tries too hard while Ajay Devgan looks confused with his own role all the time, Kareena Kapoor, with her forever over-cuteattitude, gives her best.

Now that Bollywood has a trilogy to boast, perhaps the filmmakers will think about making a movie worth watching.

Screening at QFX.
