Police seized 4 kg and 299 gram of gold brought in Nepal from India hiding under the seat of a car (Ba 7 Cha 6344) and handed over to Birgunj Customs Office.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Krishna Koirala of Armed Police Force, who led the patrol team, said they arrested car driver Arbind Singh of Birgunj Sub-Metropolitan City-13 and gold owner Amit Daruka of Adarsh Nagar-7 of Birgunj and handed over them Birgunj Customs Office for further investigation.
Police had arrested the car driver and gold owner on Wednesday evening acting on a tip-off. The huge quantity of gold was found when police checked the car in the presence of customs chief Labanya Dhakal this morning. Police also seized 20 memory cards of Sony mobile sets.
Meanwhile, Armed Police Force personnel seized sugar, chemical fertilizer and other food products worth about Rs. 200,000, which was imported illegally into Nawalparasi from India.
A patrol team of Parasi-based border security office seized 50 sacks of urea, sugar and other food products brought on bicycles evading custom tax.
Superintendent of Police Madhu Krishna Godtaula said the materials seized from the border areas have been handed over to Bhairahawa Customs Office for further action.
