KATHMANDU, Oct 19: On the fifth day of Dashain, devotees across the region are gathering to worship Skandamata, one of the nine divine forms of Goddess Durga.

Skandamata is celebrated for her unwavering love and care as she cradles the child form of Skanda Kumar Kartikeya in her arms. Skanda Kumar Kartikeya is another name for Lord Kartikeya, symbolizing knowledge and action. Consequently, Skandamata represents the goddess of both knowledge and action.

This revered deity is depicted with four arms, holding Skandakumar Kartikeya in her upper right hand, a lotus flower in her lower left hand, and displaying the Varada Mudra (gesture of boon-granting) in her upper left hand. She gracefully sits upon a lion in the Padmasana posture, signifying her association with the Surya Mandal. It is said that her complexion shines as brilliantly as the sun.

Devotees pay their respects to Skandamata on this auspicious day, seeking her blessings and guidance as they celebrate the festival of Dashain.
