Traditionally observed on the day of Chaitra Krishna Aunsi or the new moon day in the last month of the Nepali calendar, Ghode Jatra marks a significant cultural event in Nepal. The president, vice president, prime minister and other dignitaries were present at the ceremony.

It is believed that a demon who lived in a meadow, which is now Tundikhel, used to unleash terror in Kathmandu, particularly targeting children. After his death, people rejoiced by dancing on his body and riding horses. There is also a belief that the parade of horses at Tundikhel keeps the demon’s spirit away.

Moreover, the horse parade also symbolizes a gesture of welcoming the New Year.
