KATHMANDU, Jan 7: A squad of Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Teku on Wednesday arrested three persons for their alleged involvement in stealing two kg of gold from a jewelry shop in New Road, Kathmandu last December.
The police team had to open fire after the suspects tried to escape police arrest during the raid with the assistance of their friends. As the police tried to make arrests, a group of 10 to 12 people attacked the police squad to help the suspects escape arrest. One Amrit Bayalkoti, 22, from Dhawa VDC of Gorkha district, a friend of the three, was injured when the police fired a shot to take the situation under control.
Bayalkoti, who sustained bullet injuries in his buttock, was rushed to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) for treatment and is said to be out of danger, according to police.
The arrested have been identified as Dil Bahadur Pun, 20, from Rum VDC-3 of Myagdi district; Umesh Tamang, 23, of Mahakali VDC-3 of Nuwakot district; and Santosh Bayalkoti, 22, of Dhawa VDC-7 of Gorkha district.
After the theft in December last year in the jewelry shop owned by Bishnu Rijal, a special team was deployed to nab the suspects.
Based on a tip off provided by a special source, the police squad deployed from the Metropolitan Police Crime Division arrested the three from Gongabu of KMC-29.
As per the initial findings of the police, the gang inspected the site during the day, managed to have duplicate keys of the shop and raided the shop in the night. The police have been questioning them as they were suspected of carrying out heists at various cities in the country.
