KATHMANDU, April 23: A French national serving a lengthy prison sentence for drug smuggling charges was found hanging from a rope in his cell on Wednesday morning. The District Court Kathmandu had convicted Jean Pierre Saussay, 62, of France, on 3rd May 2004, for possessing illegal contraband in Kathmandu.
Inmate commits suicide in jail
Saussay was slapped with prison sentence of 16 years along with a Rs 700,000. As he failed to pay the financial penalty, his jail term was extended till 2024, of which half was to be served at Central Jail.
During his stay in central jail, he attempted to commit suicide on two separate occasions. But on Wednesday morning, he was found by two fellow inmates that shared his cell after he was shifted to Nakhu jail, the Jailor Chakrapani Gautam of Nakkhu Jail in Lalitpur said.According to him, the inmate was shifted to Nakkhu prison from Central Prison after his mental health declined. For the past several months, he hardly spoke to anyone, watched television loudly late into the night and he was never visited by any of his relatives or friends.
He was frequently taken to a mental hospital for treatments. He was found hanging while two other inmates were sleeping, jailor Gautam adding said.
DSP Kisan Singh Thapa, Spokesperson of the Metropolitan Police Range Office, Lalitpur, said that the dead body was handed to representatives of the French embassy in Nepal for autopsies. The authorities claimed that the crime scene clearly indicates that it was a suicide.
