Inmate commits suicide inside prison
Tasbir was arrested in January on the charge of murdering his wife. A single bench of judge Tej Bahadur Khadka of the District Court, Dolakha sentenced him to life imprisonment on Tuesday.
Mitrabandhu Tiwari, chief of Charikot prison informed Republica that Tasbir went to the toilet on Tuesday after having his lunch and did not come out for a long time. Later, when other inmates peeped inside through a narrow hole in the door of the toilet, they found him hanging.
"After an inmate committed suicide in the same toilet, we had made a hole in the door," said Tiwari, adding, "He had locked the door from inside and tied himself by the string of his pants in the window grill."
Police did not touch the body until late evening until the family members came to collect the details.
"The door was locked from inside," said Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Basudev Pathak of the District Police Office (DPO), adding, "We broke the door and took out the body only after his family members arrived here from the village."
DSP Pathak claimed that security has been beefed up in the prison following the suicide of two inmates within months. Earlier, the jail administration had deployed 12 persons for assuring security but after the latest incident, 20 security personnel have been deployed to make sure that the inmates are safe.
