Insceptor at Nawalpur Police Station, Talak Raaj Bhandari, informed that the girls were swimming to beat the blistering heat. “After they bathed their buffalos, the girls left the animals in a nearby field for grazing and started swimming in the pond,” said Bhandari.
“Mantura and Chanchala dived into the pond and got stuck in the mud. Shiva Kumari and Parvati also jumped into the pond to save them, and all four drowned,” he said describing the incident.
Parvati´s 10-year-old brother was injury trying to save the four girls, said police. He is undergoing medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
Police have taken the bodies to Sarlahi district hospital for autopsy.
After the incident, villagers have prohibited their children from swimming in the pond.
