KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Former national badminton champion Pashupati Paneru has decided to hang up his racquet. Paneru, who has been residing in the USA for the past couple of years, announced his retirement at a press conference held in the capital on Friday.

"I announce my retirement from national and international badminton. Pursuing a coaching career in the USA will be my immediate step," said Paneru. He claimed that he is associated with badminton clubs in Boston at present. [break]

Paneru, who had claimed bronze medals in the ninth and 10th South Asian Games in team events, had moved to the USA in 2008. He had returned to the national badminton scene after three years in 2010 and claimed the men´s singles title in the Fifth Krishna Mohan Memorial National Badminton Championship. However, he again left for the USA.

"I was surprised to win the 2010 title since I had participated in the tournament only because I could not stay away from a badminton tournament. Nepal needs programs to produce young shuttlers," said Paneru. "We can see academies in other countries. Nepal should also adopt the policy of establishing academies if the concerned authorities want to develop badminton," he added.

Paneru suggested to the Nepal Badminton Association to establish academies and organize at least four national level tournaments in a calendar year. "Badminton is one of the expensive sports. My seniors (hinting at Umesh Bhandari) helped me achieve this status. Otherwise, I also had started badminton from zero. Concerned authorities should think about all these issues," said Paneru.

He claimed that he is ready to help Nepali badminton in any possible role. "Where I´m now has only been possible because of badminton and I want to support and also be associated with Nepali badminton in future," said Paneru.

He informed that he has applied for High Performance Coaching Course Level II in the USA and claimed he would follow the USA U-19 badminton team to the Pan Am Junior Badminton Championship 2013 in Mexico as an assistant coach.

Paneru had emerged as a new badminton talent in 1998 when he participated in the Junior Asian Badminton Championship held in Malaysia. He claimed silver medal in men´s doubles during the National Badminton Championship in 2000 and clinched the men´s singles gold the following year.

He is a four-time men´s singles winner in the Krishna Mohan Memorial National Badminton Tournament. Paneru participated in six editions of the Asian Badminton Championship from 2002 to 2008 and also represented Nepal in the Thomas Cup World Team Championship in 2001 and 2006.

In the USA, Paneru has claimed medals in tournaments like the New York Open and Mid Atlantic Open.
