Addressing the inaugural session of a five-day briefing and orientation program organized by Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in cooperation with the Institute of Foreign Affairs for newly-appointed ambassadors, Shrestha underscored the need to curb the brain drain and promote economic diplomacy for the larger interests of the country.[break]
Shrestha directed the envoys to promote Nepal´s national interests abroad in line with foreign policy adopted by the country.
“The main objective of our foreign policy is to enhance the dignity of the nation in the international arena by maintaining sovereignty, integrity and independence of the country,” he said.
Stating that Nepal´s foreign policy is based on UN Charter, Panchasheel, principle of non-alignment and principles of various regional organizations, Shrestha directed the envoys to help further strengthen the relationship with the friendly countries based on the same principles.
“One of the immediate priorities of our foreign policy is to garner goodwill and support of our friendly countries for the conclusion of peace process and promulgation of a new constitution through the Constituent Assembly,” he further said.
Addressing the function, Foreign Secretary Durga Bhattarai said MoFA would help ensure effective coordination of the envoys with various ministries at home.
He said that envoys should give special considerations on promoting the interests of Non-resident Nepalis, economic diplomacy, foreign investment and exploring foreign employment opportunities to Nepalis as their important responsibilities.
The five-day briefing and orientation program is aimed at imparting knowledge to envoys about day to day functioning of embassies abroad, protocol, consular matters, Nepal´s foreign policy in the changed context, various regional and global issues, economic diplomacy, foreign direct investments, export trade promotions, foreign employments and development cooperation.
Altogether nine ambassadors and ambassadors-designate are taking part in the orientation program.
