KATHMANDU, Dec 23: At a time when eye donation campaigns launched by the Eye Bank at Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology have failed to attract donors, celebrities from the Nepali film industry have been trying to give a fillip to the campaign.

“Ever since the establishment of the eye bank, actors and actresses have actively taken part in eye donation campaigns,” said Shankar Narayan Twayana, manager at Tilganga eye bank.[break]

Recently Arunima Lamsal (actor) has been listed among the celebrities donating eye. Earlier, Ashok Sharma, Subhadra Adhikari, Karishma Manandhar, Haribansa Archarya, Madan Krishna Shrestha, Mithila Sharma, Ramesh Budathoki, among others, have pledged to donate their eye after death. Even superstar Rajesh Hamal has pledged to donate his eye.

“Eyes are a precious gift to a person. A person can make use of this precious gift both before and after death,” Mithila Sharma. “Donating eye is the noblest of all causes,” added Sharma.

Recently, Nepal Film Producer Association (NFPA) also organized eye donation camp. More than 50 celebrities from the Nepali film industry pledged to donate their eyes after death during the event.

“It´s not only the eyes I would like to donate after, but all other organs which may come into use for others. These organs may give someone a new life,” shared Subhadra Adhikari, an actor.

Director and producer Rajendra Salav also organized an eye donation camp in 1995. More than 250 persons pledged to donate their eyes after death during the camp. “As a filmmaker I had organized an eye donation camp. I was successful in convincing them to donate their eyes,” said Salav.

“If our organs can give a new life to another person after our death, I would be more than happy to donate my organs,” actor Ashok Sharma.

“I feel really proud. My donation will give eyesight to two blind persons. We should work toward making more people aware about the value of donating organs,” said Ramesh Budhathoki, an actor.
