KATHMANDU, July 9: Women rights activists have opined that abolition of Sati Pratha should be taken as a reference to run a campaign to end violence against women. Sati Pratha was abolished some 92 years ago in the country.

Sati partha (a traditional practice in which a Hindu widow had to cremate herself on the funeral pyre of her husband) was abolished by Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher Rana on Asar 25, 1977 BS. [break]

Speaking at a seminar organized in the capital on Monday, women right activists said that this day should be marked as a national day for women´s liberation.

On the occasion, Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Kedarnath Upadhyay said that the Rana ruler took an exemplary decision by ending Sati Pratha and Das Pratha.

Chairman Upadhyay said that school level education should also focus on ending violence against women.

Awareness programmes should be launched for women´s empowerment, stakeholders said.

Dr. Pancha Kumari Manandhar, Chairwoman of Justice for All Sharmila Shrestha, Chairwoman of Disabled Women Federation Saradha Lamichhane, among others shared their views at the programme.
