The TU administration had promised to fulfill several conditions set by Dr Koirala before appointment. Dr Koirla, who was appointed three months ago, said he submitted his resignation on Friday to the TU administration. But he refrained from clarifying the reason for his move. “I have submitted my resignation. I will issue a press statement regarding my resignation on Monday,” he said.[break]
A reliable source at TUTH said the TU administration had pledged to provide Rs 100 million to the hospital but has not released the amount so far. The source also said Dr Koirala had recommended transfer of 25 employees, who did not support him in his mission of strengthening the intuition. “Instead of transferring the employees the TU authority made public the names of the employees,” the source said, adding, “They had been disobeying the director.”
Dr Koirala had expected better coordination from the hospital staffers but some staffers, including senior professors had been creating obstacles. Koirala had been appointed as the director to give the hospital that had been plagued by chronic mismanagement and political interference a fresh lease of life. The hospital had been suffering huge losses and had been struggling to pay staff salary. The TU administration had claimed that Dr Koirala would bring down the hospital´s loss.
Koirala has introduced several measures to rescue the country´s largest hospital out of mess. He had stopped paying bogus overtime claims to staffers and the hospital had been saving Rs 7 million a month. The hospital administration said the bed occupancy rate at the hospital had reached almost 100 percent from 60 to 70 percent earlier.
It was alleged that most of the TUTH doctors sent patients admitted at TUTH to their private clinics. The earnings of hospital laboratory have also increased with increased occupancy.
Similarly, Dr Koirala had ended the practice of closing the ticket counter during lunch hour. Dr Koirala, who served for eight years as the director of Sahid Gangalal National Heart Center is credited with improving the hospital´s management. During his tenure, the hospital has developed into an international standard cardiac center.
