KHOTANG, Oct 25: Persons living with physical disabilities at Diktel Municipality in eastern hilly district are proving themselves that they are no less capable than their normal counterparts.

A group of 20 disabled have started commercial farming at Jagire of Diktel-3 in their efforts towards becoming economically empowered.

They have taken 40 ropani of land on lease for ten years and are trying to become self-employed and economically self-reliant, said Umesh Prasad Acharya who heads the Disabled Service Association Diktel Municipal Committee.

The Diktel Municipality last fiscal year allocated budget of Rs 200,000 for the empowerment of disabled in the district. This time the Committee instead of spending the budget in organising training, seminar, and other capacity-building events decided to use it in agro farming.

Disabled who are still struggling for social respect and dignity need to themselves prove that they can become self-reliant by means of income-generating activities. They are no less competent than normal people, Acharya said.

They have planted paddy crop, and after its harvest plan to start vegetable farming, goat and pig rearing, poultry keeping and mushroom farming and fishery, according to Acharya. RSS
