BANKE, July 8: With four additional deaths on Tuesday, death toll from diarrhea in Jajarkot has jumped to 64, according to Bir Bahadur Giri, vice-president of Jajarkot chapter of Federation of Nepalese Journalists. Jajarkot district administration said it can confirm 60 deaths, but admitted it has received reports of 64 deaths so far.

Among those dead on Tuesday are Nare Nepali of Majkot-3, Karsinghe B K of Korbap-9, Kamala Rokaya of Laha-9, and Bhim Bahadur Shahi of Pulma-9.

Two teams - one from Kathmandu and other from Regional Health Directorate - have reached the affected district. But the teams have only managed to conduct inspection so far and will start their work from Wednesday only, according to Regional Health Director Ananda Shrestha. [break]

The team that reached there from Kathmandu includes four members from the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, while the team from the Regional Directorate includes six members led by the Directorate’s deputy-director Dhir Jung Shah.

Locals say though the diarrhea epidemic has gripped the district for more than a month now, scarcity of medicine and health professionals contributed to letting the situation go out of control.

In the District Hospital in Jajarkot, patients are being treated on the floor due to scarcity of beds. Health Centers are also bursting at their seams owing to overflow of patients. Some locals have started opting to leave the district to escape the epidemic. They are demanding a special arrangement to control the spread.

Chief District Officer Resham Bahadur Panday said though there are reports of 64 deaths so far, his office can definitively confirm only 60 deaths.

On Tuesday, Health Minister Uma Kanta Chowdhary and State Minister for Health Khadga Bahadur Basyal also visited the affected district. Though medicine was airlifted to the district on Tuesday, the common populace is yet to benefit from it.
