Democratic fighter Indira Acharya dies

KATHMANDU, Feb 4: Nepali Congress leader (NC) Indira Acharya who fought against the Rana regime for establishment of democracy passed away at Om Hospital on Monday morning. Acharya was the mother of late Nepali Congress leader Shailaja Acharya.



Acharya along with Divya Koirala, Nalini Upadhyay and Kamini Giri, among others, were arrested during labor protest in Biratnagar. Workers took to streets following the arrest of their leader late Girija Prasad Koirala in 2003 BS.[break]



Acharya along with others were sent to Dhankuta jail. Nepali Congress, issuing a statement on Monday, remembered her as one of the first female protestors who were arrested for challenging the erstwhile autocratic rulers. She had also actively participated in the first democratic movement of Nepal that abolished the century-old Rana regime.



NC has expressed its deep sorrow over the demise of its democratic fighter.



NC General Secretary Prakash Man Singh honored Acharya by draping her body with the party flag. She was cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat Monday.
