KATHMANDU, Jan 8: As the government on Friday extended the tenure of Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and Commission of Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP), Nepal stating that some more tasks were left to perform, the stakeholders have come for debates whether to extend the tenure or reconstitute both the commissions.

The government, however, extended the tenures of both the commission on Friday through ordinances through their tenure is expiring from February 10.

The commissions were formed three years ago to oversee the war-era cases and ensure justice to the victims by booking the culprits.

Senior Advocate Dr. Dinesh Tripathi said that there is no relevance of extending the tenure of the commissions as they failed to yield any result for the cause of the victims.

Tripathi was of the view that a huge amount of state resources and time was wasted for no gains in the name of the commission.

Accountability Watch Committee Coordinator Charan Prasain also echoed the voices of Tripathi. "The commissions failed to win the hearts of the victims. Rather, should be reconstituted with qualified persons."

Prasain accused the commissions of spending three years without doing any remarkable work. Likewise, conflict victim Suman Adhikari said that extending the tenure unilaterally is worthless.

Adhikari warned to wage agitations if the tenure of the commissions were extended in status quo. RSS
