KATHMANDU, Feb 9: A Cabinet meeting is taking place to extend the tenure of Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and Commission for the Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP) for one more year on Thursday.
The commissions were formed to investigate the incidents of serious human rights violations committed during the conflict era. The Cabinet has to extend the tenure of the Commissions which were formed on February 10, 2015.
Debates continue to extend the tenure of CIEDP, TRC
The Commission which was extended for one year has only collected the complaints till date. There are 58,000 complaints registered at the TRC and 28,000 at the CIEDP.
The TRC was preparing to expand branch offices in all seven provinces to find details about the complaints received by the Commission.
The CIEDP has initiated works toward establishing a forensic lab equipped with modern technologies to search disappeared persons.
Likewise, both the commissions had written a letter seeking the tenure extension in accordance with the existing law.
