DAILEKH, Oct 26: Following the implementation of the new civil codes which allow husbands to file for divorce, the District Court, Dailekh has been receiving lots of divorce cases filed by men.
Previously, only women had the rights to file for divorce directly at the court as the patriarchal structure of the society held men responsible for bad marriage. The law enabling men to file for divorce came into effect from August 17.
6 men file for divorce in Okhaldhunga
According to Binod Acharya, spokesperson at the district court, more men have filed for divorce compared to women after the law came into effect.
Since then, the court has registered 14 divorce cases filed by men against nine divorce cases filed by women. Likewise, the court has also received one case each of child marriage and polygamy. The court also registered two cases of domestic violence in the same duration.
Majority of men seeking divorce at the court have mentioned that their wives refused to come home and have been staying in their parent's house. Female applicants have mentioned that their husbands did not provide them food and other necessities as well as love and ignored them completely.
