Kristina and her husband Martin had been in Mahendranagar for more than 10 days. The couple, who had arrived here from Banabasa, India, had been stuck in Mahendranagar owing to the general strike called by the Maoists in Kailali.
They left for Khaptad, Doti, on Sunday. “I am glad to be alive,” said Kristina before leaving for Khaptad.
The night Kristina went missing, her husband Martin could do little but pray. “I kept praying to Jesus the whole night,” Martin said. “There is so much insecurity in Nepal even though the conflict is over,” he added.

The couple had spent Friday evening in a local restaurant to celebrate Christmas. After having a couple of drinks, Martin left for his hotel, while Kristina said she would stay at the restaurant a little longer. But she was taken under control by the group immediately after Martin left.
Kristina claimed she was mistreated. “They also took all the cash that was in my pocket. They also took my ring,” she said. “I am not worried about the money. But the ring was a real loss,” she added. Kristina claimed the group also beat her up. She reached hotel Anand, where she had been staying, only at 5 a.m. Saturday.
On Saturday, Martin informed the police with the help of the hotel´s operator. Police are searching for the members of the group, but haven´t identified them so far, according to Sub-Inspector Hari Singh Dhami. “But we have not received a formal complaint about the looting,” he added.
