Curfew imposed in Letang after cop killed in clash with locals

MORANG, March 21: The Morang administration has issued a curfew order in some places of Letang Municipality since Monday morning after the situation became tense following a controversy over a teacher abusing a student during Holi. A female police personnel was killed in a clash between police and locals at a local school on Sunday evening.

A curfew order has been issued in the Letang Municipality area with effect from Monday morning. A female police constable Urmila Shrestha was killed in the clash at Letang-5 on Sunday.

During the clash, 18 policemen including a Superintendent of Police were injured and three protesters were injured, according to police. Morang Chief District Officer Kashinath Dahal said that a curfew has been issued in different parts of the city from 7 AM on Monday until further orders to bring the situation under control.

According to Dahal, the curfew has been imposed in the area of ​​Letang ward 5, Gange Chowk of ward 3 and 4, Kamalpur, ward office area of ward 6, Morange River area in the east and Chisang River in the West.

Students, parents and locals protested saying that 56-year-old teacher Manoj Poudel had abused a female student studying in grade 6. The school was surrounded by angry villagers as soon as the incident became public.

According to Letang Municipality Chief Shankar Rai, the incident escalated after the presence of security personnel was increased to control the crowd. The enraged mob tried to kick the teacher out of the school premises and beat him up. The female police officer died after she went into a clash to control the enraged crowd.
