Letang Incident: Nine arrested for investigation, curfew still in place

MORANG, March 22: The curfew imposed in various areas of Letang Municipality is to continue on Tuesday. The District Administration Office, Morang, issued a curfew order in some places of Letang Municipality Monday morning after the situation became tense.


A female police personnel, Urmila Shrestha was killed in a clash between police and locals at a local school on Sunday evening after the situation became tense following a controversy over the alleged abuse of a sixth-grader girl student by 56-year-old teacher Manoj Poudel. The school was surrounded by angry villagers as soon as the incident became public.

According to Assistant Chief District Officer of Morang and Spokesperson for the District Administration Office, Sharad Kumar Pokhrel, the situation has been normal after the curfew and a meeting of the security committee would be held to decide how to ease the curfew.


“We have extended the custody of Manoj Poudel, the teacher accused of sexual harassment, and further investigation is underway," said Morang Police Chief SP Jarnadan GC. “We arrested 12 people in Letang for violating Monday's curfew and released them in the evening while four others were arrested on Tuesday. We will release them in the evening.”


Similarly, police have arrested nine people on the charge of being involved in the incident in Letang on Sunday.
