The government has provided vocational training to more than 300 people. The Relief and Rehabilitation Unit under the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction (MoPR) has started to train conflict-affected people as part of a relief package. The ministry allocated Rs 5.2 million for a 45-day program. [break]
“Our main aim is to help people trying to overcome their poverty. We have provided various kinds of training as per individual skills and ability,” Ganesh Prasad Upadhyaya, acting department chief at the Relief and Rehabilitation Unit, said, adding, “Semi-literate women were given beautician training, solar PV technician training and basic computer training and the illiterate were given training in candle making.”
He also said that the program was aimed at training 300 people but the total number of trainees this year reached around 340. Under this program, the unit has provided training to people from seven districts. People in the first-phase training are from Morang, Rautahat, Sindhupalchowk, Syanja, Rupandehi, Banke and Dang. The training program started from June.
“Under this program, each person is selected from a conflict-affected family. And there is no age limit,” Upadhyaya informed.
The Local Peace Committee in every district has handled the training program, with the Small and Cottage Industries Development Committee and USEF Nepal providing assistance.
The government recently decided to provide each child who lost his/her father and mother during the armed conflict Rs. 5,000 per month for personal expenses until they reach 18. Similarly, the government is planning to develop 16 different conflict-affected villages as model villages.
According to data provided by the Relief and Rehabilitation Unit, the number of people killed during the armed conflict stands at 16,719, the number of disappeared is 1,302, number of abducted 1,448, and maimed 4,305, whereas 83,925 have been displaced. Similarly, 11,775 people had to suffer property loss and damage and 5,600 infrastructures were destroyed during the conflict.
