"I return to Washington encouraged by what I heard from the Maoists, also encouraged by what I heard from the (CPN) UML and (Nepali) Congress regarding their shared interest in seeing the full implementation of the peace accord," said Geoffrey R Pyatt, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State at the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs. Talking to journalists at the US Embassy at the end of his two-day visit, Pyatt further added that US hopes to see "full and effective" implementation of the peace accord and consolidation of democracy in Nepal.
Pyatt met Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai, top leaders of UCPN (M), NC and CPN-UML, Deputy Prime Minister Narayankaji Shrestha and senior government officials and discussed political and economic issues. He also met Tibetan Reception Center in Kathmandu.
On non-implementation of human rights promises of political parties, Pyatt said that the US will be looking at the full spectrum of human rights issues and will judge a government not just by its words but its actions.
Pyatt also lauded Nepal´s role in allowing Tibetans fleeing Tibet to cross over to Dharmasala, India, through Nepal. In a question related to terrorist tag on the Maoist party, he said removing the tag would depend on full "implementation of the peace accord and transition of the Maoists into a non-military political force."
