CIAA files corruption cases against 1,545 people in a year, over Rs 8 billion sought in compensation

KATHMANDU, Oct 5: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) prosecuted 1,545 people and organizations holding public office in 201 corruption cases during the fiscal year 2023/24. The total compensation demanded exceeds Rs 8.40 billion.


According to the 34th annual report released by the CIAA on Wednesday (October 1), 201 cases were filed at the Special Court during the fiscal year 2023/24.

As per Section 18 of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority Act, 2048, if a person holding public office is found to have committed corruption based on appropriate reasons and evidence during investigation and inquiry, a case can be filed according to prevailing laws. Citing this provision, the CIAA stated that it has filed 201 cases at the Special Court.


According to the annual report of the CIAA, 380 women, 1,117 men, and 48 organizations have been prosecuted in corruption cases.


The majority of cases are related to illegal benefits or losses. In 58 cases, the CIAA has filed corruption charges against 1,029 individuals and organizations. A compensation claim of over Rs 3.97 billion has been made against them.


In the second-highest category, 48 bribery cases have been filed against 84 individuals. Similarly, 33 cases of damage to public property involve 243 people, 13 cases of revenue embezzlement involve 116 people, and 11 cases of illegal wealth accumulation involve 28 individuals.
