A joint meeting of poultry farmers, chicken sellers and feed producers held recently took the decision. [break]
Though the price has been fixed at Rs 260 per kg, small retailers are selling chicken for Rs 260 per kg.
“We have fixed the price of dressed chicken at Rs 250 per kg. Farmers will get Rs 170 per kg for live chicken,” said Gokarna Ghimire, president of National Chicken Farmers´ Association.
For consumers, price of live chicken has been fixed at Rs 180 per kg.
According to poultry entrepreneurs, production of chicken has dropped by over 30 percent with the onset of winter season, bringing down supplies in the market.
Ghimire also said increasing load-shedding hours and declining population of chicken in the farms has not only affected supplies, but is also affecting the production of chicks in hatcheries.
“If chicken production continues to decline, price is likely to go further up,” said Ghimire. He also informed that the production of chicks has dropped to around 600,000 heads a month, down from around 900,000 heads recorded a few months ago. Ghimire also said supplies from the farms have also declined by around 40 percent to 60,000 heads per day in the capital, compared to the figure recorded a few months ago.
Consumer rights activists, however, have attributed the frequent rise in price to unnecessary hassles created by valley-based poultry entrepreneurs in the supplies of poultry from other districts.
