The Chhath folksongs and lore are played not only at each and every house but also at public places with the help of the loud-speaker. These songs are heard with the beginning of the Tihar festival. [break]
The music outlets are doing a brisk sale of DVDs, CDs and VCDs including the Chhath folk songs these days.
"There is no dearth of buyers. I sold 500 CDs before the start of the festival season and I am ordering for more," said Ramesh Patel who owns a music outlet here.
Although Birgunj is predominantly a Bhojpuri speaking area, the Chhath songs which are in Maithili language are also popular. Seeing the popularity of the Chhath folk songs, the local cable operators have also started dishing out Chhath music videos on two channels around the clock.
The six local FM radio stations are also playing the Chhath songs most of the time.
It is estimated that albums, CDs and VCDs containing Chhath folk songs worth four million rupees have sold so far.
