The book revolves around India and China, both in the middle stages of market-led development and dealing with the problem that societies have faced since the dawn of capitalism. The author charts out trajectories for both the countries and China’s time horizon for reconciling growth with equity has probably grown shorter whereas India’s grown longer. The book examines the social and political conflicts that the market has unleashed, and the successes and failures of these countries in trying to contain them. The author is skeptical about the inevitability of China and India’s rise to global dominance in the twenty-first century. He also examines the impact of the US’s tacit abandonment of its dream of regaining unchallenged hegemony in the post-cold war world, and tracks the rapidly deteriorating relations between India and China.

Freakonomics: A Rouge Economist Explores the Hidden side of Everything
By Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner
Rs 400

This book has been described as melding pop culture with economics. It is a collection of economic articles where the authors argue that economics is, at root, the study of incentives. Levitt argues that many apparent mysteries of everyday life don’t need to be so mysterious and that they could be illuminated and made even more fascinating by asking the right questions and drawing connections. Dubner’s evident contribution is a compelling writing style that answers various economic inquiry. The book does an excellent job of expaning solution strategy and how data analysis is used to illuminate the way.
