Why I love reading and you should too, says a fifth grader

Books might seem boring to many people as many say they feel sleepy as soon as they open a book. But that is because they are usually forced to read course books or the types of books that adults want them to read. People are so busy sticking their nose in other people’s businesses through online media, and gossiping about celebs that they don’t even know about. But books are fun to read.

But that is because they are usually forced to read course books or the types of books that adults want them to read. I am an eleven-year-old studying in Grade V at Rato Bangala School, and I read books (fiction as well as non-fiction) every single day. I love reading. This is because no one forces me to read. I just read what I want and when I want. I am not saying that I don’t study my course books, I study them every day. Children should be given time to read what they want, be adventurous, scary or dramatic.

My love for reading started when I was about six or seven years old. I got a lot of books for my birthday, especially Geronimo Stilton books. At that age, my reading habit wasn’t that great. My parents would help me read those books every night. Hence, I started to love reading. I loved to read about the amazing adventures that Geronimo went to. I then started reading and collecting many books.

I feel like I’m in another world when I read. I get so wrapped up in the story that it feels like I am a part of the story. I forget that I am in Kathmandu, in my room or sitting on my bed.

For someone to go through similar experience, you just have to find the book you like. I have found my type of books, but even after having read many of them, I have not yet found my ultimate favorite book.

The top five books I read in 2017 are ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ by Madeleine L'Engle, ‘When Friendship Followed Me Home’ by Paul Griffin, ‘Wonder Woman: Warbringer ‘by Leigh Bardugo, ‘Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself’ by Judy Blume, and ‘The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar’ and Six More by Roald Dahl.

‘A wrinkle in Time’ is about two boys and a girl. They travel through time, go to outer space to meet girls and one of the boys’ dads. Their adventure is definitely worth reading. Similarly, ‘Friendship Followed Me Home’ is basically about a twelve-year-old boy who meets a dog that helps him through many things. He meets a girl who changes his life. ‘Wonder Woman: Warbringer’ is about Dianas’ (wonder women) first time meeting a human and saving the world. This book surprised me lot.

Meanwhile, Judy Blume is one of my top favorite authors. Her books are very relatable to me and ‘Starring Sally J Freedman as Herself’ inspired me a lot. This book is about Sally’s time staying in Florida in 1947. Likewise, ‘The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More’ is fun to read. Dahl is an amazing writer. This book has seven magical stories about things that “happened” to him. These are stories that even adults would love.

I plan on reading a lot of books this year as well. There are several books on my list, including ‘Wonder’ by RJ Palacio that is about a facially challenged boy going to elementary school for the first time. ‘A Hot Glue Gun Mess’ by Kate Albrecht is about a Youtuber and interior designer. It includes the writer’s crazy and funny experiences and has many pretty projects we can do at home. Just ‘As Long As We’re Together’ by Judy Blume is about two best friends. The other book I would like to read in 2018 is the ‘Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing’ by Judy Blume. The book I look forward to reading the most is ‘Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls’ by Elena Favili and Francesca Cavallo. It has as many as 100 stories of extraordinary women that did a lot for us.

I really want kids like me to read books more. I want them to know that reading is great. Everyone should try reading a chapter every day, and if you have the access to internet, you can also try audio books or ebooks. Trust this bookworm when I say please read as many books you can, and experience the magic of powerful stories that’ll make you travel through various phases and places.
