KATHMANDU, Nov 16: The body of guide Lal Bahadur Tamang, who fell during the Mardi Himal climb, has been retrieved from a 700 meters deep gorge to a safer spot 200 meters above the bottom of the gorge.

According to Hari Bahadur Chhetri, the ward chairman of Machhapuchhre Rural Municipality-9, the rescue team successfully brought Tamang's body from the gorge to a flat area. Tamang, 62, had been guiding a Norwegian climber when he fell on November 10.

The location of the body was identified during a reconnaissance flight on Tuesday morning, which prompted the dispatch of the rescue team. A team consisting of Lakpa Chiring Sherpa, Chiring Lama Bhote, and Pasang Sherpa retrieved the body from a gorge about 700 meters below at an altitude of 5,300 meters. They then brought the body 200 meters up from the gorge to a safer area.

According to the search and rescue team, the body had to be brought with the help of a helicopter from that location. The team reached the site after three hours of climbing by ropes. This had followed the ride to the upper base camp via helicopter.

Due to a communication breakdown between the rescue team and the contact team at the high camp, the situation remained tense throughout Tuesday. The news of the retrieved body only reached authorities after the three-member rescue team arrived at the high camp at 11 PM on Tuesday.

Preparations are underway to bring the body to a nearby location by helicopter on Wednesday, confirmed Ward Chairman Chhetri.
