SARLAHI/BIRGUNJ, Dec 20: United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has intensified protest alleging the major political parties of forcibly tabling the  constitution amendment bill.

Tensions between local demonstrators and security personnel ran high on Sunday. Sporadic clashes occurred in the district headquarters of Parsa and Sarlahi, which remained tense throughout the day.

Police, who had earlier arrested 10 leaders of the UDMF in Sarlahi for their involvement in vandalism of the District Administration Office (DAO), released them later following an agreement with the agitators to make the protest peaceful, according to acting Chief District Officer (CDO) Khad Kumar Pokharel.

However, police again arrested one of those leaders, Ashok Yadav, while he was at a local FM radio for an interview at around 8 pm. Yadav is the district chairperson of Federal Socialist Forum Nepal (FSFN).

Likewise, Birgunj remained tense for the third consecutive day on Sunday. Local protestors and police clashed with each other during demonstrations at
different locations of the district headquarters of Parsa.

Police detained 11 demonstrators from Birgunj, according to SP Rajubabu Shrestha at the District Police Office (DPO), Parsa.
