KATHMANDU, Aug 30: Search and rescue operations for people missing after the devastating flash floods and landslides that struck the Nepal-China border region last Wednesday have entered their fifth day.
As time passes, the death toll from the floods and landslides continues to rise in both countries. According to consolidated figures from Nepal and China, 691 people have died so far, while 3,044 remain missing.

According to China’s state run Xinhua News Agency, 16 people have died and 546 remain missing after massive landslides carrying mud and debris struck Kyirong County in Shigatse. At a press conference in Kyirong County, officials said floods and landslides had caused extensive damage at the Kyirong border port, a key hub for Nepal China trade.
According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 675 bodies have so far been recovered in Nepal, while 2,428 people remain missing.
The missing in China include 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries, in addition to Chinese citizens.
In Nepal, hydropower project workers and employees make up a large share of those still missing. According to the authority, 933 people remain unaccounted for. Another 589 foreign nationals are also missing on the Nepali side.
Amid the disaster, 7,514 people have been rescued alive in Nepal. Relief supplies, including clothing, instant noodles, biscuits and rice, are being transported by helicopter to heavily affected areas such as Rasuwa and Nuwakot.
Rescued people have been moved to safer locations along the Trishuli corridor and to medical camps. In the flood-hit areas, the army and rescue teams are prioritising elderly people and young children, taking them to safe shelters for first aid and medical attention.
Search and rescue operations have been intensified in both countries as authorities continue efforts to locate those still missing. Relief and rescue operations are also continuing in the affected areas.
