Bhattarai engaged in severe violation of poll code

GORKHA, Nov 2: Former Prime Minsister and UCPN (Maoist) candidate for constituency-1 of Gorkha district, Babu Ram Bhattarai has courted controversy by engaging in severe violation of the electoral codes.



Bhattarai landed at the constituency to address a crowd in a helicopter on Friday. Besides that, Bhattarai has distributed T-shirts to his party cadres with election symbol printed in them. Likewise, Bhattarai´s colorful pamphlets have been pasted at major roads of the district.[break]



Bhattarai claimed that he does not know what poll codes allow or bar. "I could not read each and every provisions of the code of conduct," said Bhattarai. However, the Maoist leader claimed that he did not breach any code of conduct during his electoral campaign.



The Maoist leaders have said that distributing calendars, jackets, among others, do not violate of conduct.



Altogether 38 candidates contesting from the three constituencies of the district have been found violating the poll codes rampantly.



Nepali Congress and UML are launching their electoral campaign by holding their functions at the premises of schools, and other government offices. Apart form that, the candidates have carried motorbike rallies in their constituencies.



Gorkha district election office has informed that nine complaints have been filed against the candidates of different political parties charging them with violation of poll codes. "Maximum complaints have been lodged against Nepali Congress and Maoists," said district election officials.
